The Job Market

The job market has changed dramatically with the advent of the internet. LinkedIn has become a dominant force for both recruiters and candidates, recruitment agencies still exist in their thousands as do headhunters but the work in a very different way to that even 5 years ago. Companies are using social media and looking directly for staff, the recruitment sections of both national and local press have shrunk to be replaced with their own online platform. Aggregators and search engines are new on the block and some are huge global concerns, so how do you find a job in this market?

Companies do not set out to employ people. They have a service to perform or product to manufacture and until they can get the right robots, find they need to employ people. There is often a resource gap limiting the ability of the organisation to do what it wants to do. To fill this gap the organisation will first look internally but, failing to find anyone with the necessary skills, experience and availability, will then look externally. At this stage, it may well be unknown whether this “gap” is a full-time role, permanent or interim. The next question, of existing staff, is “Do you know anyone?”

Up to this point, we have the “hidden” job market as although the need is there nothing has been advertised and it does not exist as a formal permanent job in the company structure.

Look at the pages within this area of our website to find out how the job market works and where you can go to find your next role.
