Online Profile

Your Online Profile
Your online profile like that you include at the head of your CV is your summary of knowledge, skills, experience, approach and achievements that relate to the situation in which it will be used. Online it is very much a “soundbite” environment where you need to be seen in headlines with some qualifying and quantifying support where appropriate. Make sure it is short, to the point, relevant and accurate.

Many find it easier to put this together after they have created the rest of their CV, this has the benefit of enabling you to become very aware of your career and those areas that best illustrate you and your capabilities achievements and experience.

Your Online profile will also need to match the requirements of the social media sites you use it on and you’ll need to adapt it very differently for LinkedIn and Facebook. Make sure to check the field size of your social media platform section to make the most of the space you have available. After a few days go back to it to review the content and check to make sure it has the appropriate headline and check it against others with similar career backgrounds or those of people already in the role you are seeking.

Your On-Line Reputation
A useful exercise is to search on-line for your name to find what others can see and discover about you. Good content is worth referring to bad content is a killer.

Beware
An inappropriate photo or reference to behaviour on your Facebook page will not work in your favour and could lead to a difficult question if you do get to interview. Check what you have found and look at it as a prospective employer if it creates a poor impression then get rid of it.

Your Private Information on a CV
Your CV is a detailed list of private information that could be used to steal your identity and when you post it online it sits in an open window for anyone to anyone to come and find out about you. All you need to state is your name, locality (the first part of your Post Code), dedicated job search email and dedicated job search mobile telephone number. By using a mobile number and specific email address for your job search activity you are protecting yourself.

Increasingly a LinkedIn profile web address (URL) is included, it is personal preference as to whether you decide to include it, however, it does give the reader to find out more about your career including any professional recommendations you may have. If you do include it ensure that you have a personalised URL. (Access your LinkedIn profile settings to customise your Public Profile URL, you will find it on the right-hand side after the large tick box headed Customize Your Public Profile)
